4:30-5:45 GENERAL SPEAKER
  • What steps are you taking to ensure that your GLBT clients do not end up as guests in their own home? A Case Study
This session will be a global overview of the six areas of financial planning and their application to same sex couples with a particular focus on what clients need to do to protect themselves.  For example, the speaker will discuss the following topics
    • Are assets titled appropriately to bypass probate?
    • Umbrella policies – don’t usually cover a same sex partner – should the family have two umbrella policies?
    • Auto insurance – make sure that the partner is an “insured” not just a “listed” driver
    • Retirement accounts – are the beneficiaries up to date and correct?
    • Pension planning – many pensions don’t provide benefits for the same sex spouse.  What are the options for replacing this income stream?
    • Benefits packages – sometimes it makes sense to use both partners’ benefits while other times it’s better to just use one.
    • Custodial issues for families with children
    • Titling of assets – what’s the difference between Tenants in Common and Joint Tenants by the Entirety?
    • Who should buy long term care insurance?
    • Hospital Visitation
    • Viatication –  to help with final medical expenses and avoid bankruptcy
    • SS – General points to be aware of for the partner and/or children
    • Medicare – General points to be aware of

Unmarried couples need your help.  Often they don’t even know what they need.  You can address this and build your practice by developing a reputation as a person with the answers to the financial issues of gay and lesbian couples.  This is done by deciding whether to focus on this market niche, if yes, you want this focus, then developing story ideas relevant to this niche and delivering those story ideas in such a way that the relevant publications and web sites’ reporters and editors identify you as the “go-to” person when same-sex, gay and lesbian or unmarried couple stories are being written.

In this session, you will learn to ...
1. Shape perceptions of expertise to build reputation using traditional marketing techniques.  We will tune up your “elevator drill” explanation of what you do, help you focus on your expertise, and discuss what the media needs in an expert source.

2. Develop newsworthy story ideas that capture the attention of both your target clients and target reporters’ attention. We will create timely, topical story material from questions of your own clients, shared by your own members who have completed and returned the homework assignment.

3.  Build long-term media relationships by knowing your target publications. We will match story ideas with appropriate publications and discuss specific media training techniques for getting the attention of editors and reporters, including:
  • What the media needs in any interview
  • Taking the time to understand the question
  • Referring the reporter to a better source
  • Providing the reporter with additional material
  • Providing the reporter with an updated photo
  • Making certain your professional biography confirms your expertise..
