Speaker Biographies





Amy Augustine

Senior Social Research Analyst, Calvert Group, Ltd.

As a Senior Social Research Analyst with Calvert Group, Ltd., a socially responsible mutual fund company, Amy analyzes corporate practices and their impacts in the areas of diversity, labor relations, worker safety, and international labor rights.

With over eight years experience in socially responsible investing, Amy has successfully engaged many companies in dialogue aimed at improving their corporate responsibility records and has worked on a number of Calvert's initiatives, including efforts promoting board diversity and equal employment opportunities, with a particular focus on rights and protections for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender workers. Recognizing that corporations can and should play a vital role in empowering women, Amy also helped develop the Calvert Women’s Principles, the first global code of conduct focused on empowering, advancing, and investing in women worldwide.  Amy collaborates with institutional investors, non-profit groups, and other experts to enhance and intensify Calvert’s efforts, and frequently writes and speaks on these issues to various internal and external stakeholders
.

Amy also serves on the Steering Committee of the Social Investment Research Analyst Network.  As Amnesty International’s Stop Violence Against Women Campaign Coordinator for the state of Maryland and a member of the D.C. Women’s Human Rights Action Team, Amy extends her diversity and human rights expertise outside of Calvert.



Peter Berkery

Director, CCH Wall Street

Peter Berkery is the Director of CCH Wall Street, a leading provider of information and software tools for securities compliance professionals. He manages a diverse portfolio of print and electronic research products, Internet and desktop software tools.

Peter is the author of two books: Financial Planning for Gays and Lesbians, and, along with his partner Gregory Diggins, Gay Finances in a Straight World.

Peter is a Certified Financial Planner®. He holds a law degree from American University and an LLM in Taxation from George Washington University; he also earned an MA in International Affairs while at American. Peter and his partner Gregory Diggins, CPA, CFP®, have been together for 20 years.

Beth Chapman is the founder of Ink&Air which specializes in delivering clients and assets to independent financial advisory firms, mutual fund companies, broker/dealer firms, CPA firms, independent insurance agencies, and e-commerce companies offering financial products and services to the financial advisor distribution channel.  Beth designs and implements strategic media and web communications campaigns. 

She is skilled in client advocacy and in translating client viewpoints into trend-based news stories.  She is a sought-after speaker to audiences of financial advisors on the strategies for marketing professional practices.  She regularly places stories and develops interview opportunities for her clients with
The Wall Street Journal, New York Times, USA Today, Barron's and national, regional, local, trade and professional publications, as well as broadcast and Web outlets. 

She is the author of

From 1994 to 1996, she was the consulting media director for Charles Schwab & Co., Inc., Institutional Division Annual Impact Conference, responsible for developing interest on the part of the national financial media in covering this corporate event.  Previously, Beth was Vice President, Public Relations for The Putnam Companies, Boston, helping meet corporate goals by setting the agenda on trend stories with the financial media.  Beth edited the first 20 issues of the monthly Financial Services Times, later known as Financial Services Week, a national trade publication providing practice management and trend analysis for financial planners, accountants, bankers, and insurance agents.

David W. Dube

David W. Dube has been President of Peak Capital Corporation, a financial services holding company consisting of an NASD/SIPC broker-dealer, an SEC-registered investment advisory firm, corporate finance and insurance agency subsidiaries and affiliates, since April, 2001.  Mr. Dube was President and Chief Operating Officer of Kings Road Entertainment, Inc., a publicly-traded entertainment and educational products company, from October, 1999 to March, 2001.  Mr. Dube was Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of FAB Capital Corporation, a merchant banking and securities investment firm, and served in various additional capacities, from September, 1997 through October, 1999.  Mr. Dube holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration and a master’s degree in taxation from Suffolk University and a master’s degree in accounting from Bentley College.  Mr. Dube is a certified public accountant in the states of Florida and New Hampshire and holds both general and principal securities, investment advisory and insurance licenses.  In addition, Mr. Dube is the author of “Analyzing Financial Statements:  A Case Study” and “Accounting and Tax Issues for Long-Term Assets.”





Congressman Barney Frank

Barney Frank has been in Congress since 1981.  He is the Chairman of the Financial Services Committee.  Previously he was a Massachusetts State Representative and an assistant to the Mayor of Boston.   He has also taught at several Boston area universities.











Richard Gann

Richard D. Gann serves as vice president of sales and marketing for
Triple Net Properties, LLC. He administers the national training and education programs, oversees the development of sales publications and marketing programs, and assists the sales desk with complex §1031 exchange issues.
 
Gann has ten years of experience as an attorney in real estate, commercial, leasing, taxation and estate planning, and served as vice president and general counsel for a commercial property tax auditing firm. He has taught hundreds of legal and financial seminars, and is a certified senior advisor. In 2006, Gann co-authored Proposition 83 (aka "Jessica’s Law") in California, the latest of several Gann family-authored ballot initiatives dating back to the historic Proposition 13 that was passed in 1978. In 1996, Gann served as a consultant to the Assembly Judiciary Committee of the California State Legislature. As a financial advisor, he has represented Smith Barney, a division of Citigroup Global Capital Markets, Inc and LPL Financial Services.  Richard lives with his wife Dee and son Addison in South Orange County.
 
Gann earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of California, Los Angeles and a juris doctorate from California Western School of Law. He holds Series 6, 7, 24, 63, and 65 licenses as a member of the National Association of Securities Dealers (NASD).



Frederick Hertz

A native of St. Paul, Minnesota, Frederick Hertz graduated from Boalt Hall (University of California. Berkeley School of Law, 1981), clerked with the Minnesota Supreme Court (1981-1982), and subsequently received a Master's Degree in Urban Geography from the University of California, Berkeley (1991).

Mr. Hertz practices real estate and land use law in Oakland, California. His real property practice emphasizes the formation and dissolution of real property co-ownership agreements, especially the resolution of property and financial disputes between unmarried couples (both same-sex and opposite-sex couples) and domestic partners, and purchase & sale and other real property matters. He provides both transaction and litigation counsel and also serves as a mediator and arbitrator, with an emphasis on real property disputes and non-marital/domestic partner dissolutions.

Mr. Hertz writes and speaks nationally on property issues facing unmarried partners. He is the author of Legal Affairs: Essential Advice for Same-Sex Couples (Owl Books) and co-author of two Nolo Press books: Legal Guide for Lesbian and Gay Couples and Living Together: A Legal Guide for Unmarred Couples. Mr. Hertz has appeared as a panelist for California Continuing Education/State Bar and Bar Association of San Francisco programs. He has appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Show, the Today Show, All Things Considered, and Talk of the Nation, and has been quoted in the New York Times, American Demographics, Hero Magazine, the Advocate, Kiplingers Magazine, the Washington Post, the New York Post and the New York Observer.



Lawrence S. Jacobs

Lawrence (Larry) Jacobs has developed a practice in helping same-sex couples protect their  assets and loved ones through partnership planning. He also has more than 30 years' experience  representing local businesses in a wide range of matters, including business transactions,  contracts and employment law. He is frequently asked to consult on management and marketing  issues. He is licensed to practice law in Maryland, the District of Columbia and Virginia.

Larry has been a highly visible spokesman for the civil rights of the GLBT community.  Passionately interested in the well-being of students, he co-founded the Safe Schools Coalition of  Montgomery County in 1995. He has also served as Chair of the Board of Education's Family  Life Advisory Committee and as a co-chair of the Safe Schools Action Group. He is currently a  member of the Board of Equality Maryland, the State's leading group working to protect the rights of GLBT Marylanders, and was its President from 2003-2006.







Kevin Keller

Kevin R. Keller is Chief Executive Officer of Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards Inc. (CFP Board), a nonprofit professional regulatory organization that has awarded CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ certification to more than 55,000 individuals in the U.S. who have completed CFP Board’s initial and ongoing certification requirements.  CFP Board’s mission is to
help people benefit from competent and ethical financial planning through the creation and enforcement of uniform standards of competence, practice and ethics for financial planning and through activities that create public awareness of the importance of financial planning and the financial planning process.  In an effort to position itself to more effectively advance that mission, CFP Board is moving its headquarters from Denver, Colo. to Washington, D.C., with the transition expected to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2007.

Kevin joined CFP Board in May 2007 after serving 16 years with the Association for Financial Professionals (AFP), a membership
organization for the finance profession that provides products, education and training for treasury and corporate finance.  At AFP, he held the position of senior vice president and chief operating officer for the prior seven years and had management responsibility for programs and services for the 16,000-member organization. He led the organization's strategic planning process and enhanced and grew the Certified Treasury Professional credential.

Keller has held senior staff positions at several associations and earned the Certified Association Executive (CAE) credential in 2000. He holds a B.S. in agriculture and an M.S., both from Ohio State University.






Anne Moellering 

Vice President, Brand & Product Marketing, PlanetOut, Inc.

As vice president for U.S. marketing of PlanetOut, Inc., Anne Moellering manages brand marketing as well as member acquisition and retention efforts for PlanetOut Inc.'s U.S. brands, including GAY.COM. She is also responsible for the creation, launch and management of a new brand targeting the women's segment of the LGBT market.

Anne is a seasoned marketer with 15 years of experience across various online, video game and sports-related businesses. Most recently, she was director of marketing at MyPoints, the Internet's foremost loyalty points program, where she drove new membership rates to record levels while reducing acquisition costs. Her experience also includes roles as director of marketing at e-commerce player Fogdog Sports and video game giant Sega of America, where she led game system and software marketing as well as managed relationships with the four major professional sports leagues. Anne also brings experience in strategic planning from her days as a consultant at Bain & Co.

Anne graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor's degree in Economics from Dartmouth College. She also holds an M.B.A. from Stanford's Graduate School of Business. A passionate surfer and all-around outdoor sports freak, Anne co-founded the NorCal Women's Surf Club which has over 700 members to date. She is also a certified USSA 50' class skipper, PADI diver and was a member of the U.S. Women's Lacrosse Team from 1990-1992. Anne has lived one month or more on every continent except Antarctica (where the surfing's just a little too cold).




Lisa Ayn Padilla, J.D., LL.M.

With a J.D. from Suffolk University Law School and an LL.M. in Taxation from Boston University, Lisa is admitted to practice law in the state and federal courts of New York, New Jersey and Massachusetts, the First and Second U.S. Circuit Courts of Appeals, the United States Tax Court and the United States Supreme Court.
 
Lisa is an Adjunct Professor for New York Law School’s LL.M. Program in Taxation, teaching business planning, wealth transfer tax and advanced estate planning.  She has been a panelist and speaker for a variety of organizations, including testifying before the New Jersey Assembly regarding the Family Equality Act; the American Red Cross for recipients of the Victim’s Compensation Fund; Bank of New York on Estate Planning for Unmarried Couples; New York County Lawyers’ Association on Planning for Alternative Families; Financial Planners’ Association on Beyond Ozzie and Harriet, Planning for the Non-Traditional Family; and the Wedding Expo held in New York City, where Lisa was quoted in the New York Times.   Additionally, she was the Chair of the Domestic Partnership Agreements Panel and a panelist on the Advanced Estate Planning Forum at the Lavender Law Conference (2001 in Dallas and 2002 in Philadelphia).
 
 Lisa is a regular presenter for the Lesbian and Gay Community Center of New York (“The Center”) on financial and legal matters that effect same-sex couples.  In addition, she is a member of New York State Bar Association, Trusts & Estates Law Section, active on the Sub-Committees on commissions, and sub-sub-committees on Joint Bank Accounts and Biotechnology




JT  Hatfield Smith


Joshua T. Hatfield Smith CFP®, CHFC, CLTC CLU, is a financial advisor with SPC Financial, Inc.. SPC, an Independent Registered Investment Advisor has served the Washington, DC area for over 30 years. Joshua, known by many in the GLBT community as J.T., is a highly respected financial planner committed to helping safeguard and protect domestic partners, while helping them keep their financial homes in order. His expanding knowledge and community experience continue to help benefit his clients, whether their concerns are retirement planning, property ownership, investment planning, estate protection, or special considerations concerning sudden illness or expiration. J.T. works towards helping his clients create a higher level of financial security to prepare them for unplanned debilitating circumstances and for their golden years.








Cindy Sterling

A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania with a bachelor's degree in economics and master's degree in psychological services, Cindy received her chartered financial consultant (ChFC) certification in 1997.  Cindy serves as the proprietor of Sterling Financial Planning, a fee-only financial planning firm.  In addition, Cindy is a consultant for planned giving,  working as a senior associate with Washburn & McGoldrick, Inc.  Previously, she worked for nine years as the director of gift planning at Vassar College where she developed new donor-centered marketing strategies  Cindy started her development career at the Philadelphia College of Textiles and Science serving as the director of prospect research and later the director of major and planned gifts.
